The ICMAB was present at the #CGutenberg18 with a role play workshop on institutional communication

"Comunicació Institucional: un joc d'estratègia". This was the title of the LAB IDEAS workshop at Campus Gutenberg 2018, which Anna May Masnou, Communication Officer at ICMAB, organized together with seven other Communication Officers of  research centers and institutions of the UAB Campus: Alexandra Canet (CVC), Àlex Argemí (ICN2), Pere Figuerola (ICP), Sebastián Grinschpun (IFAE), Isabel Lopera (ICTA), Ona Tribó (PRUAB) and Gemma Ortiga (PRUAB).

ICMAB, 17-20 SEPT 2018: MATENER 2018: Severo Ochoa Summer School on Materials for Energy

On 17-20 September ICMAB will host the MATENER 2018: Severo Ochoa Summer School on Materials for Energy. This summer school is addressed to last year undergraduate, master and PhD students, who are interested in the development of materials with energy applications, such as photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, batteries or superconducting materials. BCN, 28-29 SEPT 2018: The European Researchers Night is back!

The European Researchers' Night (Nit Europea de la Recerca) is celebrated throughout Europe on the last Friday of September, with the aim of bringing science, research and technology closer to the public. In Catalonia, under the theme "Research, heritage of all", outreach activities will take place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September in Barcelona, ​​Tarragona, Lleida, Girona, Blanes and Vic, among other places.

The ICMAB will participate with some highschool talks on Friday morning, a EU corner at ICMAB on Fiday afternoon, with a nanomaterials workshop in CosmoCaixa on Friday evening and in the Biblioteca Sagrada Família on Saturday morning with "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers".

Seven "Joves i Ciència" at the ICMAB labs during this summer!

This year the ICMAB hosted seven (7) students from the program "Joves i Ciència" from Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera: Roger, Pilar, Antoni, Pere, Mariona, Anastasia and Arnau. They came to our Institute to do some research stays with some of our researchers, in the fields of spintronics, solar cells, superconducting materials, porous materials for energy, sustainable chemistry and crystallography.

Four students from the UAB Argó Program have spent 10 days at the ICMAB this summer

The ICMAB hosted this year four students from the UAB Argó Program, from June 25 until July 11, 2018. During their final day they presented their projects on "Synthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles" and "Synthesis and characterization of an oxide thin film", which they carried out in our Scientific Platforms with the help of many of our technicians and research staff.

The ICFO School on Emerging Photovoltaics visits the ICMAB research labs

On Thursday, 5 July, the students participating at the ICFO School on Emerging Photovoltaics (2-6 July 2018) came to ICMAB from 3 to 6 pm to visit our research labs. The ICMAB researchers and PhD fellows guided the participants through the different labs and explained them the research performed in our Institute on photovoltaics, including organic solar cells, photonic crystals, perovskites, and oxide photovoltaic materials, and the equipment and facilities for materials characterization.

ICMAB received the Maker of Merit award at the Barcelona Maker Faire 2018

On 16-17 June the ICMAB participated at the Barcelona Maker Faire. Many members of the NANOMOL group presented their research on encapsulation and hydrogels for biomedical applications. They used the spherification concept as a metaphor for the nanoencapsulation, and the gelification of agar agar for the hydrogels. The stand, which was always full of families and kids, obtained the Maker of Merit award, given by the organization to the best Makers of this year's edition.

From ICMAB, Jordi Rius and Ashley Black will give two microtalks on crystalline structure of minerals and lithium-ion batteries, Martí Gibert will participate on a debate on how nanotechnology affects our life, Javier Repetto will talk about nanomedicine and the film Fantastic Voyage, and Anna May will be challenging the participants with a photonic contest and coordinating some of the events.

The nano-ingredients of the "Superflavored 2D material" winning cake

The "Bake your best cake" contest of our ICMAB party counted with 11 participants and 12 cakes or desserts (one participant baked 2). A jury formed by 6 experts in the field valued the originality, the aspect and the flavor of each one of them. The contest took place at 11 am in the morning, and caused a huge expectation among the ICMAB members, as you can see in the picture.

The winning cake was the "Superflavored 2D material" cake, from Marta Vendrell. This cake had some very special ingredients... Take a look at them:

Susagna Ricart and Arántzazu González at the XXX Chemistry Debate of the SCQ-IEC

On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) hosted the XXX IEC Chemistry Debate "Connect the Materials Science with the young students"Susagna Ricart and Arántzazu González took part in the event, which was held from 4 to 7 pm at the amazing "Sala Prat de la Riba".

The event also included an awards ceremony for the students who won the prizes to the best secondary school Research Projects (12a edició dels Premis als Treballs de Recerca). Three of these students will come to ICMAB this summer as part of this award to work closely with three of our researchers and see the daily life of a scientist!

Clara Viñas and Francesc Teixidor, co-authors of the book "Boron-Based Compounds: Potential and Emerging Applications in Medicine"

From 11 May 2018, the book from Wiley Editors "Boron-Based Compounds: Potential and Emerging Applications in Medicine", which is focused on the medical applications of boron-based compounds, will be available. Prof. Clara Viñas is one of the co-editors of the book, together with Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins (Leipzig University).

In additon, both Prof. Clara Viñas and Prof. Francesc Teixidor have contributed to the book with a chapter on "Cobaltabisdicarbollide‐based Synthetic Vesicles: From Biological Interaction to in vivo Imaging"

Little scientists for a day: great Kids Day at ICMAB 2018!

On Wednesday, 5 September, the ICMAB staff could bring their children, their grandchildren, and even their nephews and nieces to spend a morning at our centre full of scientific activities for another edition of the Kids Day!

In the end, more than 75 kids of ages between 1 and 17 joined us! Many volunteers from the ICMAB helped out during the day, organizing the activities and taking care of the kids. Thank you all for your great collaboration and participation!

The "Societat Catalana de Química" (SCQ-IEC) organizes every year the contest on the best research chemistry projects for secondary school students (Premis als Treballs de Recerca de Batxillerat dins l'Àmbit de la Química). The award for the finalist students is a two-week scientific internship in a Catalan research center or university during July 2018.

Ana M. López-Periago, second prize at the science monologues contest "Científiques a prop"

On July 17, 2018, the fourth edition of "Científiques a prop" (Getting closer to scientists) organized by AMIT-CAT took place with great success in La Monroe de la Filmo. This edition counted with the participation of Ana M. López-Periago, from the ICMAB, who became second in the audience award, with her talk on "CO2: hero or villain?", in which she talked about the benefits of using supercritical CO2 in the preparation of materials.

Ana M. López-Periago at the IV edition of "Científiques a prop" organized by AMIT-CAT

AMIT-CAT (Associació de Dones Investigadores i Tecnòlogues a Catalunya) organizes the IV edition of "Científiques a prop" in La Monroe bar (Barcelona) on July 17, 2018, at 7 pm. This event consists of four scientific monologues given by four women researchers. Ana M. López-Periago, from ICMAB, will give the talk "CO2: here or villain?", in which she will explore the diverse funcionalities of CO2 for synthesis when you can control its properties.

Xavier Obradors, Josep Fontcuberta and Gerard Tobias, participate at the 50 Universitat Catalana d'Estiu (UCE) "I tanmateix, la remor persisteix", which for the first time has an edition in Manresa. They will give some lectures within the program of science and technology: From quantum physics to nanotechnology (De la física quàntica a les nanotecnologies). The UCE in Manresa started on Thursday, 5 July, and will finish on Tuesday, 10 July.

ICMAB activities at the 12th Barcelona Science Festival 2018

On 9-10 June 2018, ICMAB participated at the 12th edition of the Barcelona Science Festival with lots of activities. The festival counted with more than 230 activities in 33 different spaces distributed along the Ciutadella Park. 160 institutions (research centers, entities, associations, universities, individuals) participated in the event, organized by BCNCiència (Institut de Culgura de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona), and more than 20,000 attendees joined the festival during the weekend.

"Bojos per la Física" comes to ICMAB to discover magnetism and piezoelectricity

The Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera has developed the program "Bojos per la Ciència" to open the doors of the most relevant research institutes to the most excellent secondary school students. ICMAB joined in 2017 ICN2, IFAE and UAB for the second edition of "Bojos per la Física" and continued this year within this program, which has been a real success.

Every spring, ICMAB celebrates its anniversary with a party for all the members of the Institute. ICMAB was founded in 1986, so this year we celebrated its 32 anniversary! From early in the morning until mid-afternoon, a lot of different activities were organized by many volunteers, so that everybody could particiapate and enjoy the day.

Extraction of DNA and regenerative medicine: participation of ICMAB at the Pint of Science 2018 in Barcelona

Pint of Science, the festival that gathers people together in bars to listen to scientific presentations instead of watching a football match, has been a great success, with more than 20,000 participants around Spain. In Barcelona, 10 bars were hosting scientific talks during the three days of the festival (14, 15 and 16 May 2018). ICMAB was also represented, as we explained in a previous post: Javier Repetto in Casa Orlandai on Tuesday 15 May, and Irene Antonin Alfa Bar on Wednesday 16 May.

"Photonic leaf" the winning picture of our FOTICMAB 2018 photo contest

Our traditional photo contest, FOTICMAB, is already a consolidated activity and receives every year a high participation. This year, we had three categories: scientific, artistic and "ICMAB moments". The artistic category was the one with the highest participation (48 photos), followed by our most favourite scientific category (19 photos) and the recovered "ICMAB moments" with 10 photos.

The winner of the scientific category is the photo you can see above; "Photonic leaf" by Cristiano Matricardi. "Rainbow", by Laia Soler won the artistic category, and "¡Con una sonrisa se trabaja mejor!" by Adriana Kyvik won the "ICMAB moments" category. The three winners are all PhD researchers at the Institute. The winner of each cateogory received a smartbox to enjoy a dinner for two.

The ICMAB at the "XIII Fira d'Empreses" at the UB

On April 11, 2018, the ICMAB was present at the XIII "Fira d'Empreses" or Business Forum, at the Universitat the Barcelona (UB), after some years of absence. This forum is designed to showcase job opportunities and career paths and attract students in the final stages of their university degree, and is organized by the Science and Engineering Departments of the UB (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, Earth Sciences and Biology). 105 industries, research centers and universities participated in the event, which counted with the visit of more than 600 unversity students from sixteen degrees and twenty-two masters in these scientific areas.
