The CSIC Catalunya organized a morning in which women scientists from different CSIC centers visited the school "Escola Can Maiol" in Sants, Barcelona, to talk and experiment with science. From the ICMAB, Arántzazu González, chemist, visited the group of 3r Primària (8-9 years old) and did some experiments to discover the acid/basic properties of some natural substances that we have at home by the change of color. Sants3Radio was there to talk with them!
Within the framework of the 10alamenos9 Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, a NANO-STORIES contest has been launched for high school students, from 3rd and 4th ESO and 1st and 2nd BTX. The contest is open to participants of the high schools in Catalunya, in a first stage. Send your NANO-STORY until 3 April 2020!

Two articles made-in-ICMAB at the SCQ journal: magnetic reduced graphene oxide and Smart-4-Fabry project
The last issue of the journal of the Catalan Chemical Society (Revista de la Societat Catalana de Química) includes two articles from ICMAB researchers. The first one is about graphene oxide nanocomposites decorated with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, and the second one is about the European project "Smart-4-Fabry", which develops a new nanomedicine for the treatment of the Fabry disease. The articles are written in Catalan. We encourage you to have a look at them!
This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three great scientists for the developement of Li-ion batteries. The Catalan Chemical Society (SCQ) wanted to dedicate this year's Christmas Conference to this fact, and invited M. Rosa Palacín to give the keynote lecture on this topic. The event took place on Thursday, 19 December 2019 at the IEC (Institut d'Estudis Catalans), in Barcelona.

In 2020, the ICMAB will be present at the next edition of YoMo "Youth Mobile" conference (25-29 Feb 2020) with two activities around women in science: the dramatised reading "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers", which visibilized women scientists of our history, and the talk "The hidden truth: Women behing the periodic table", which talks about the different periodic table elements that have been discovered by women and some curiosity around women and the chemical elements. Both activities will take place on Thursday, 27 February 2020at La Farga de l'Hospitalet.
The Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), together with many research centers and universities, including the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), have initiated an art project that will represent in a different way thw world of nanotechnology: NANOCAEDRE. Susagna Ricart, from the ICMAB, participates in this project with her expertise in the superconducting phenomena. The presentation of the project will take place at the Basilica Sants Màrtirs Just i Pastor (Barcelona), on Tuesday, 10 December, at 7 pm.
A new video in the JoVE journal on a new protocol from Gervasi Herranz and the MULFOX group relating magnetics and photonics
A new protocol from Gervasi Herranz and the MULFOX group at ICMAB shows how magnetic fields can change the propagation of light in confined nanostructured materials and reveal enhanced optical responses. This new protocol is published as a VIDEO-ARTICLE at the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). The new protocol allows to directly study how magnetization changes the photonic response.

During the Science Week (Setmana de la Ciència) 2019, which was between the 8 and 17 of November 2019, the ICMAB received the visit of 4 schools, which amounted a total of 185 students. The students could attend the "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers", visit some of our labs and participate in the workshops about "Properties of the Minerals and Periodic Table Elements".
During the Science Week 2019, in November, six of our researchers brought scientific research closer to the young students aged 15-17 years old within the framework of the programme "A researcher in your classroom". They went to five different highschools and gave a talk to the students, who had the opportunity to learn more about nanoscience and nanotechnology and about what is it like to be a scientist.
Our "Manuel Cardona" Library has acquired 17 new scientific books for all our staff! The books are about some of the main topics of our research: magnetism, neutron scattering, smart inorganic polymers, medical imaging, carbon nanomaterials or thermoelectric materials. Martí Gibert participates in the "Science Truck" YouTube program about nanoscience and nanotechnology!
Martí Gibert, PhD researcher at the NANOPTO group, participated on Friday, 8 November 2019, on the YouTube Science Truck programme, in which the main topic was Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and the invited scientific youtuber was Anna Morales (Size Matters), who is working on her PhD in Switzerland. Martí talked about Organic Solar Cells and Nanostructures! You can listen him from minute 53:24 to minute 1:02. Well done, Martí!
The new edition of the scientific photography contest FOTCIENCIA is now open! The aim of this initiative, organised by the CSIC and the FECYT, is to bring science and technology closer to society. The participants have until 16 December 2019 to send their photographies! Good luck!
This year, the Maker Faire Barcelona took place the weekend of 5-6 October in a new location: at the NAU BOSTIK, in the neighborhood of La Sagrera in Barcelona. The space was perfect for this kind of event, full of artists, inventors, creativity and sustainability. We felt really good there! From the ICMAB, Andrés Gómez and Anna May did two rounds of the workshop "Printing nanomaterials with 3Doodler" and gathered around 12-15 participants in each round. Thank you to the Maker Faire for counting on us!

In the morning of Thursday, 26 September 2019, Judith Morlà, TecnioSpring researcher at the Nanomol Group, and Andrés Gómez, Senior Technician at the Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab, became "A researcher in your classroom": they went to give some science talks to two high schools, in the framework of the European Researchers' Night.
A new Helium Liquefier has entered the ICMAB "We will be able to satisfy between 90-95 % of our Helium needs"
We have a new Helium Liquefier! With the new ATL 160 QuantumDesign equipment, we will be able to satisfy between 90-95 % of our Helium needs (now we were around 60 %). We use liquid Helium at the Low Temperatures and Magnetometry Service, since magnetic measurements are carried out at extremely low temperatures (5 K!). Liquid Helium is used as a refrigerant.
The European Researchers’ Night, since its firs edition in 2005, brings science, technology and researchers closer to the general public on the last Friday of September. The ICMAB participated in this year's edition with talks, workshops and a dramatised lecture at the event organized at CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona, and in the CSIC "Residència d'Investigadors".
During the European Researchers' Night celebrated on Friday, 27 September 2019 in Cosmocaixa Barcelona (Nit Jove de la Recerca), the representation of the dramatised lecture "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram Followers" was held (twice!) with a great amount of people in the audience! We could expland the knowledge of great women scientists to all those who came to see the Châtelet team in action!

"Women in Science" Theater for the Researcher's Night in CosmoCaixa: Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers
On 27 September, during the Young Researchers' Night in CosmoCaixa, you will be able to enjoy the dramatised reading created by the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona. The play tells a story that takes place in the palace of Madame Châtelet, during the 18th century. Châtelet was a French mathematician and physicist. In chronological order, a series of wise women from the history of science will enter her salon, and will explain us their lives and discoveries.
On Friday, 27 September 2019, most European countries and cities celebrate the European Researchers' Night: an event in which science professionals bring their work closer to citizens through multiple public events. The goal is to show the diversity of research fields and the impact that science has on our daily lives. Some ICMAB researchers will give talks at CosmoCaixa, we also organize a workshop on nanomedicine and... you will be able to see the dramatised lecture "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers" in CosmoCaixa! Three "Joves i Ciència" doing research in materials science at the ICMAB: superconductors, photovoltaics and MOFs
Elies Molins participated in the creation of the exhibition "Energía: origen y final del todo", which was exhibited at Laboratorium Museum in Bergara (Basque Country) from January to May 2019. The curators and designers were Carlota Oliver, Javier Tejada (Universitat de Barcelona) and Elies Molins (ICMAB-CSIC).
The CSIC Annual Report 2018 is now online. You can find information about the 120 research centers and units, 1,597 research groups, and 10,642 total staff. The ICMAB article "Hydroxypropyl cellulose photonic architectures by soft nanoimprinting lithography" (Nature Photonics12, 343 (2018)) appears as one of the highlights in the Materials Science and Technology area.
Clara Viñas and Francesc Teixidor, from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Book, have written Chapter 5 of Volume 1 of the "Handbook of Boron Science". The chapter is entitled: "Halogenated Icosahedral Carboranes: A Platform for Remarkable Applications". The handbook counts with 4 volumes, the first one being "Boron in Organometallic Chemistry". The handbook is edited by Narayan S Hosmane (Northern Illinois University, USA)andRobert Eagling.

Gervasi Herranz and the Quantum research performed at ALBA Synchrotron at the CCCB Quantum exhibition
On Wednesday, 12 June 2019, the Quantum exhibition at CCCB received the visit of three scientists working in Quantum research at the ALBA Synchrotron: Gervasi Herranz, from the ICMAB, Salvador Ferrer, from ALBA, and Jordi Fraxedas, from the ICN2. The three researchers talked to an audience of about 40 people about their quantum experiments at the ALBA synchrotron.
Xavier Obradors participated on June 19, 2019, on a roundtable about the "Energy of the future" in the framework of the European Week of Sustainable Energyin Vil·la Urània (Barcelona). Obradors gave an introductory talk on "Nanotechnology and Energy Transition" and then participated in the discussion with the other experts in the field from different research centers and organisations.
Our traditional photo contest, FOTICMAB, is already a consolidated activity and receives every year a high participation. This year, we had three categories: scientific, artistic and humoristic. The artistic category was the one with the highest participation (27 photos), followed by our most favourite scientific category (12 photos) and a humoristic category, with (only) 5 photos. We also received one video in the ClowntICMAB video category!
The book "Oxide Spintronics" (Pan Stanford Publishing) has recently been published. Ignasi Fina and Gervasi Herranz, reserachers at the MULFOX group (Laboratory of Multifunctional Thin Films and Complex Structures) have co-authored the book, collaborating in some chapters about spintronic in multiferroics, and orbital symmetry and electronic properties of 2D electron systems.
We received a call from one of the students of 1st BTX of the Institut Marina, from La Llagosta. They wanted to visit us, since they had seen us at the "Fira de la Recerca en Directe" at CosmoCaixa Barcelona. So we agreed they would come and visit us. On Friday 24 May 2019 they came to the ICMAB to discover the "Materials of the future for energy" and to celebrate a EU Energy Day with us.
The Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera develops the program "Bojos per la Ciència" to open the doors of the most relevant research institutes to the most excellent secondary school students. The ICMAB joined in 2017 the initiative "Bojos per la Física" coordinated by the ICN2, and the IFAE. This year, Ignasi Fina and Jordi Faraudo were in charge of showing piezoelectricity and molecular simulation to the students.
On Friday, 15 March 2019, the secondary school INS Mercè Rodoreda (Hospitalet de Llobregat) celebrated their "V Scientific Day" (V Jornada Científica) with scientific activities for their students, from 1st ESO to 2nd BTX. José Vidal-Gancedo, Reseracher at ICMAB, was one of the invited speakers. He had the big challenge of talking about "Organic radicals for biomedical applications" to 3rd and 4th ESO students.
The Material-ES scientific magazine is published every three months by the Spanish Materials Society (SOCIEMAT). They are always looking for authors that would like to publish an article with them. Written works in Spanish and English will be accepted. Once received, they will be scheduled for publication in the next issues.
On 5 June 2019 we celebrate the World Environment Day to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. The event called "Environment and Society" is organized at IDAEA-CSIC. Nora Ventosa, researcher at the ICMAB and vice-president of the SCQ, will open the event, which has the Periodic Table as main theme, and in which all the speakers are women scientists!
This year the ICMAB has participated for the third time in the seventh edition of the University Programme FUB+GRAN "Saber per descobrir", organized by the Fundació Universitària del Bages (UVIC-UCC), and addressed to people of more than 55 years old, who have interest in learning more. On Wednesday, 29 May 2019, the students came to visit the ICMAB to see some of our scientific and technical services.
On June 4 the final event of Nanoinventum will take place at the Faculties of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Barcelona. Primary school students and their teachers from 5 different schools, involving more than 200 students, will present the work in nanorobots that they have carried out this year. They will also interview Anna Roig (ICMAB) and Mercè Segarra (UB) to know more about the life of a scientist.
Energy Days are organised by local public and private organisations to celebrate the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2019, organised by the European Commission, between 17-21 June 2019. Energy Days are activities and events that promote clean energy transition. Any activity can be an Energy Day – from a workshop, to a competition, to a tour of a power station – provided it engages citizens and energy stakeholders in building the Energy Union. At the ICMAB, our Energy Day will be on June 17, 2019, with the ICMAB Periodical Lecture given by Jordi Llorca, on Hydrogen!
All you ever wanted to know about the present and future of oxide electronics, compiled in a roadmap
Mariona Coll and Josep Fontcuberta from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), Fabio Miletto Granozio from the CNR-SPIN (Complesso Universitario di Monte Sant’Angelo, Napoli, Italy) and Nini Pryds from the Department of Energy Storage and Conversion, Technical University of Denmark, have edited the compendium "Towards Oxide Electronics: a Roadmap" published recently in Applied Surface Science. The article counts with 28 contributions from 56 authors of 42 academic institutions and industries from Europe, USA and Japan. The compendium has 93 pages and includes 913 references!
During three days, between 20-22 May, the Pint of Science Festival, which brings science to bars and pubs, will take place in many cities of Spain. Vic will host this festival in La Jazz Cava, and Mariona Coll will be there the night of Wednesday, 22 May 2019.

Have you ever thought if the carbon-carbon (C-C) bond distance is always the same, or it can change? And if it changes, which is the maximum distance of this kind of bond? An article published in "Chemical & Engineering News!" addressed this topic. After this article was first published, Clara Viñas contacted C&EN to let them know that even longer carbon-carbon bonds exist than the ones they mentioned: In 2002, a team including Clara Viñas described a 2.022 Å long carbon-carbon bond in an inorganic cluster (Inorg. Chem. 2002, DOI: 10.1021/ic011285z).

Clara Viñas, Rosario Núñez and Francesc Teixidor, from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Laboratory at ICMAB, and Isabel Romero, from the Universitat de Girona, co-authored the Wiley-VCH book "Smart Inorganic Polymers: Synthesis, Properties, and Emerging Applications in Materials and Life Sciences", in particular, the chapter "Highlighting the Binding Behavior of Icosahedral Boron Clusters Incorporated into Polymers: Synthons, Polymers Preparation, and Relevant Properties".

The RSEQ is preparing a special issue of the journal "Anales de Química", that will come out on May 5, 2019, to celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT) 2019. At the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) we celebrate Sant Jordi 2019with the second edition of the Book Exchange. This year, we also included two bookmarks to give as a souvenir to all our staff.
Ferran Macià, researcher at ICMAB in the MULFOX group has been selected to participate in the Spanish edition of the international science outreach programme “I’m a scientist, get me out of here!”. The 2019 edition of “Somos científicos, ¡Sácanos de aquí!” takes place from 1-12 April 2019. During this time, Ferran will chat in a multidisciplinary group of scientists – the CSIC zone – that includes researchers from other CSIC centres.
On Wednesday, 27 March 2019, we received the visit of Engineering Undergraduate students from the Escola Universitària Salesiana de Sarrià (EUSS) (Salesian University School of Sarrià). The EUSS is a center afiliated to the UAB created in 1994 and located in Barcelona. Xavier Obradors gave a first overview to the ICMAB research and then the students could visit some of our labs.
One of our workshops for primary school students called "Become a Materials Detective" is the star of the TV children's show "Catacrak" from Barcelona Televisió (betevé), showcasted on Sunday 31 March 2019! Students from the school "Escola Mestre Morera" from Barcelona came to ICMAB to participate in the activity, in which they are introduced to the nanoworld and to the daily life of minerals. On Friday, 29 March 2019, the "Matheroes: Supermaterials, the materials of the future" were presented for a school class of students aged 11-12 (6è Primària) from Sabadell in the Ponent Library in Sabadell (Biblioteca de Ponent). Núria Crivillers, Juan-Luís García-Pomar and Anna May Masnou, presented some of the supermaterials and their properties and applications.
The students of physics and chemistry of 4th ESO of the highschool "La Tordera" in Santa Maria de Palautordera received the visit on 6 February 2019 of Anna Laromaine, researcher at ICMAB. Anna visited the highschool in the framework of the #11F2019, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, in which many researchers gave talks in primary and secondary schools during that week.
On Thursday 21 March, the Superconducting Materials group was at the "Espai Ciència" of the "Saló de l'Ensenyament" at the CSIC-Catalunya stand, which included different kinds of activities from different Catalan CSIC research centers. The Superconducting team showed the visitors the science behing the levitating train, liquid nitrogen and the properties of nanoparticles.
On Monday, 18 March, the meeting "Science and Research in the Agenda 2030" (Ciencia e Investigación en la Agenda 2030) took place in La Moncloa (Madrid), with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque, and the High Comissioner for the Agenda 2030, Cristina Gallach. The CSIC President, Rosa Menéndez, participated in the event, and Mariano Campoy-Quiles, from ICMAB-CSIC, attented the event, together with 150 representatives of the science, research and innovation field in Spain.

On Friday, 1 February 2019, students from the Centre d'Estudis Roca school, in Barcelona, came to the ICMAB to discover the materials of the future in solar energy! The visit consisted in a first talk from Mariano Campoy-Quiles, researcher at the ICMAB, followed by a visit to four different labs: SEM, XRD, AFM and NANOPTO labs. The visit is in the framework of the ESCOLAB programme of the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
#11F2019 Arántzazu González in "L'informatiu" TVE1 for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Arántzazu González, researcher from the ICMAB-CSIC, went on 11 February to a Primary School (Can Maiol) to talk to the students and visibilize women scientists, within the initative "Nuestras científicas: Jornada de investigadoras actuales y futuras" of the CSIC-Catalunya. The initiative appeared on the TVE1 news programme "L'informatiu" at 2 pm on 11 February 2019. Look at it here, from minute 16:04!
The CSIC Delegation in Catalunya wants to contribute to the promotion of scientific vocations in young girls, and facilitate the contact between them and the scientists from the nearby research centers. For this reason, an educational action in the framework of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February) is organized, consisting on school visits by some CSIC researchers, who will explain their research projects and their life as a scientist to primary school students.
From 7 to 11 February, Barcelona will be the City of Science. The Biennal Ciència i Ciutat will fill the city with activities related with science: talks, debates, roundables, exhibitions, etc. The ICMAB will also participate by collaborating in two roundtables about Chemistry and Health, and Chemistry and Bateries (8 Feb, Cosmocaixa). A broad and comprehensive review on thermoelectric materials has been published in "Materials Science and Engineering: R: Reports", a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Elsevier established in 1993 with an impact factor of more than 25! The review, with 47 pages, includes the participation of Mariano Campoy-Quiles and Bernhard Dörling from the ICMAB-CSIC, and 12 more institutions around the world (Italy, USA, UK, Germany, Sweden and Spain).

Jordi Faraudo, researcher at the Materials Simulation and Theory Department from ICMAB, is the Guest Editor of this Special Issue of the MDPI Entropy journal devoted to "Thermodynamics and Entropy for Self-Assembly and Self-Organization". The Deadline for manuscripts submissions is 31 July 2019.

This year, the 17th edition of the "Fira Recerca en Directe", organized by the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) in collaboration with Obra Social "la Caixa", will count with the participation of the "Superconducting and Large Scale Nanostructures" group (SUMAN), which will show, among others, the levitating superconducting train. The science fair will take place at CosmoCaixa on 6-9 March 2019.
During three days, between 20-22 May, the Pint of Science Festival, which brings science to bars and pubs, will take place in many cities of Spain. Sant Cugat del Vallès will, for the first time, host this festival! The "Cal Temerari" bar will be full of science for three days!
The next edition of Pint of Science will take place on 20-22 May in many cities around Spain, including Barcelona.
Barcelona, 29 April 2019: "Madame Châtelet" dramatised reading will open a Alumni UB conference cycle on women of science
Register before it's too late! The dramatised reading "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers", which recently received a Grant from FGCSIC, will open the Conference Cycle organized by Alumni UB "Dones de ciència retrobades en la història". The dramatised reading will take place on Monday, 29 April at 6 pm at the "Sala Gabriel Oliver" (Facultat de Filologia, Edifici Històric UB). Entrace is free but registration is needed.
On Wednesday 10 April 2019, the ICMAB will be at the XIV Business Forum "Fira d'Empreses" organized by the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Chemistry, with the participation of three more faculties, Mathematics and Computer Science, Earth Sciences and Biology. The ICMAB research is present at the 10th International Postgraduate and Continuous Training Forum in Madrid in the CSIC stand (5E01). The forum opens its doors on 28-30 March from 10 am to 8 pm. If you are a student and/or a professional in the education field, here you will find endless options to expand your academic education: masters, doctorates, postgraduate studies, or language schools, in business schools, educational centers, universities, or research centers.
Within the programme "A researcher in your classroom" (Un investigador a la teva aula), researchers from the ICMAB can spend a class at one secondary or primary school and show the students what it is like to be a scientist and the research in nanomaterials performed at our Institute.
On Friday, 14 December 2018, 25 secondary school students from the "Escola Vedruna Gràcia" visited the ICMAB thanks to the ESCOLAB programme. The students, all from the scientific branch, could enjoy a talk on "Nanomaterials for nanomedicine" by Anna Laromaine, from the NN group, and then visiti some of our Scientific Services.
On Tuesday, 27 November 2018, we had a very special visit in our Institute: "the scientists" class formed by 24 six-year old students from "La Trama" school in Sabadell visited us. It was a fantastic visit. All the kids were very happy to become real scientists for a day, and to visit the laboratories, the clean room, the glove boxes, the microscopes and even to perform an X-ray diffraction experiment to discover what is sand made of.
"Converteix-te en un detectiu de materials" brings more than 100 students at ICMAB for the Science Week!
During two mornings, 12 and 13 November 2018, the ICMAB hosted the workshop for secondary school students "Become a materials detective" (Converteix-te en un detectiu de materials) to celebrate the Science Week 2018. Four classes of 2nd ESO from the IES Vallès (Sabadell) came to ICMAB by train and became scientists for a day.
On Thursday 25 October, the students from 2n BTX from the "Col·legi Maristes de Montserrat" (Lleida) took the bus and came to our center to spend an afternoon learning about nanotechnology and supermaterials! They could enjoy the visit of the "Matheroes" exhibition, a talk from one of our researchers, and a visit to our installations.
Arántzazu González, Ramon y Cajal researcher at ICMAB and participant of the program "A Researcher in your classroom" was at two primary schools in November, in the framework of the "Science Week" to show the students what is a scientist and what type of research we do at the ICMAB.
On 26 October 2018, Anna Laromaine participated in the project "Ciencia y Tecnología en femenino", organized by the Asociación de Parques Científicos y Tecnológicos de España (APTE) and with the support of Bayer, which took place at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). The project consisted of a whole morning of science talks, workshops and a visit to the exhibition "Women that changed the world" for secondary school students.

A new book has just been released to the market. It is a science book about light, but not just that, it is a book about experiments to play with light "Descubriendo la luz: experimentos divertidos de óptica". The ICMAB congratulated for the participation at Expominer 2018 for all the workshops, Matheroes exhibiton and talks presented
On 15-16 November 2018, the members of the ICMAB Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) visited our Institute to scientifically evaluate the research lines and the overall performance of the Institute. In this year's visit, three research lines were evaluated: RL2: Superconductors for power applications; RL4: Molecular electronics; and RL5: Multifunctional nanostructured biomaterials.
The 4th conference on "Business Women" repeated enue in Vilanova i la Geltrú, on Friday, 26 October. Imma Ratera, researcher at the NANOMOL group at ICMAB, participated in a roundtable about the role of women in the modern society.
The programme A researcher in your classroom "Un investigador a la teva aula" brought Imma Ratera, researcher at the NANOMOL group, to the secondary highschool INS Alba del Vallès, in Sant Fost de Campsentelles (Vallès Oriental) on 18 October 2018.
The dramatised reading "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers" will open this STEAM day, full of science and technology activities for girls, that will take place on Saturday, 17 November, in the "Biblioteca Vapor Badia" in Sabadell. After the "Châtelet" play, which features some female scientists of our history, a bunch of workshops will be hapenning. From ICMAB, Andrés Gómez will bring the "3D printing bridges"activity.

From Monday 22 October the exhibition MATHEROES: Supermaterials, the hereos of the future will be at the ICMAB hall. During the days that the five Matheros will be here with us, some activities are organized: we will present the project to the UAB students, we will carry out a roundtable about the image of women in audiovisual content, and some of our researchers will offer guided visits for our support staff.

On Friday, 28 September 2018, the ICMAB and most of the research centers in Catalonia, Spain and Europe, celebrated the 2018 European Researchers' Night (named "Nit Europea de la Recerca" in Catalonia). The ICMAB was at CosmoCaixa Barcelona from 7 pm until 11 pm for a night of nanoscience and nanotechnology workshops and a talk on spin currents!

On Wednesday, 5 September, the ICMAB staff could bring their children, their grandchildren, and even their nephews and nieces to spend a morning at our centre full of scientific activities for another edition of the Kids Day!
In the end, more than 75 kids of ages between 1 and 17 joined us! Many volunteers from the ICMAB helped out during the day, organizing the activities and taking care of the kids. Thank you all for your great collaboration and participation!
The European Researchers' Night (Nit Europea de la Recerca) is celebrated throughout Europe on the last Friday of September, with the aim of bringing science, research and technology closer to the public. In Catalonia, under the theme "Research, heritage of all", outreach activities will take place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September in Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida, Girona, Blanes and Vic, among other places.
The ICMAB will participate with some highschool talks on Friday morning, with a nanoscience workshop and a Speaker's Cornet talk in CosmoCaixa on Friday evening, and in the Biblioteca Sagrada Família on Saturday morning with "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers".
The "Societat Catalana de Química" (SCQ-IEC) organizes every year the contest on the best research chemistry projects for secondary school students (Premis als Treballs de Recerca de Batxillerat dins l'Àmbit de la Química). The award for the finalist students is a two-week scientific internship in a Catalan research center or university during July 2018.
This year the ICMAB hosted seven (7) students from the program "Joves i Ciència" from Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera: Roger, Pilar, Antoni, Pere, Mariona, Anastasia and Arnau.They came to our Institute to do some research stays with some of our researchers, in the fields of spintronics, solar cells, superconducting materials, porous materials for energy, sustainable chemistry and crystallography.
On Thursday, 5 July, the students participating at the ICFO School on Emerging Photovoltaics (2-6 July 2018) came to ICMAB from 3 to 6 pm to visit our research labs. The ICMAB researchers and PhD fellows guided the participants through the different labs and explained them the research performed in our Institute on photovoltaics, including organic solar cells, photonic crystals, perovskites, and oxide photovoltaic materials, and the equipment and facilities for materials characterization.
On Wednesday, 30 May 2018, the ICMAB received the visit of the students belonging to the University Program FUB+GRAN, organized by the Fundació Universitària del Bages (UViC-UCC). The students of this program are all over 55 years old, and they all are curious minds and interested about all different kind of topics.
Gil Gonçalves and Gerard Tobias, editors of the book "Nanooncology" on nanomaterials for cancer treatment
The ICMAB reserarchers Gil Gonçalves and Gerard Tobias are the editors of one of the most recent Springer books, Nanooncology: Engineering Nanomaterials for Cancer Therapy and Diagnosis.
On 16-17 June the ICMAB participated at the Barcelona Maker Faire. Many members of the NANOMOL group presented their research on encapsulation and hydrogels for biomedical applications. They used the spherification concept as a metaphor for the nanoencapsulation, and the gelification of agar agar for the hydrogels. The stand, which was always full of families and kids, obtained the Maker of Merit award, given by the organization to the best Makers of this year's edition.
On 9-10 June 2018, ICMAB participated at the 12th edition of the Barcelona Science Festival with lots of activities. The festival counted with more than 230 activities in 33 different spacesdistributed along the Ciutadella Park. 160 institutions (research centers, entities, associations, universities, individuals) participated in the event, organized by BCNCiència (Institut de Culgura de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona), and more than 20,000 attendees joined the festival during the weekend.
The Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera has developed the program "Bojos per la Ciència" to open the doors of the most relevant research institutes to the most excellent secondary school students. ICMAB joined in 2017 ICN2, IFAE and UAB for the second edition of "Bojos per la Física" and continued this year within this program, which has been a real success.

Extraction of DNA and regenerative medicine: participation of ICMAB at the Pint of Science 2018 in Barcelona
Pint of Science, the festival that gathers people together in bars to listen to scientific presentations instead of watching a football match, has been a great success, with more than 20,000 participants around Spain. In Barcelona, 10 bars were hosting scientific talks during the three days of the festival (14, 15 and 16 May 2018). ICMAB was also represented, as we explained in a previous post: Javier Repetto in Casa Orlandai on Tuesday 15 May, and Irene Antonin Alfa Bar on Wednesday 16 May.
Our traditional photo contest, FOTICMAB, is already a consolidated activity and receives every year a high participation. This year, we had three categories: scientific, artistic and "ICMAB moments". The artistic category was the one with the highest participation (48 photos), followed by our most favourite scientific category (19 photos) and the recovered "ICMAB moments" with 10 photos.
The winner of the scientific category is the photo you can see above; "Photonic leaf" by Cristiano Matricardi. "Rainbow", by Laia Soler won the artistic category, and "¡Con una sonrisa se trabaja mejor!" by Adriana Kyvik won the "ICMAB moments" category. The three winners are all PhD researchers at the Institute. The winner of each cateogory received a smartbox to enjoy a dinner for two.

On April 11, 2018, the ICMAB was present at the XIII "Fira d'Empreses" or Business Forum, at the Universitat the Barcelona (UB), after some years of absence. This forum is designed to showcase job opportunities and career paths and attract students in the final stages of their university degree, and is organized by the Science and Engineering Departments of the UB (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, Earth Sciences and Biology). 105 industries, research centers and universities participated in the event, which counted with the visit of more than 600 unversity students from sixteen degrees and twenty-two masters in these scientific areas.
Clara Viñas and Francesc Teixidor, co-authors of the book "Boron-Based Compounds: Potential and Emerging Applications in Medicine"
From 11 May 2018, the book from Wiley Editors "Boron-Based Compounds: Potential and Emerging Applications in Medicine", which is focused on the medical applications of boron-based compounds, will be available. Prof. Clara Viñas is one of the co-editors of the book, together with Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins (Leipzig University).
In additon, both Prof. Clara Viñas and Prof. Francesc Teixidor have contributed to the book with a chapter on "Cobaltabisdicarbollide‐based Synthetic Vesicles: From Biological Interaction to in vivo Imaging".
Prof. Anna Roig and Dr. Agustín Mihi bring the new materials to secondary schools with the program "A researcher in your classroom"
The program "A researcher in your classroom" brought Prof. Anna Roig to Lliçà d'Amunt, at Institut Lliçà (Tuesday, 3 February), and Dr. Agustín Mihi to Institut Dr. Puigvert de Sant Andreu in Barcelona (Wednesday, 4 February). Both audiences were secondary school students of 4t ESO.
The XIX Edition of ExpoRecerca Jove 2018 took place between 22 and 24 March in La Salle, Barcelona. Anna May, from ICMAB, participated as member of the jury of the presented projects by the talented groups of students from all over the world.
Is is a great event in which the students present their pioneer and innovative projects, in many different fields: health, technology, biology, chemisty, arts & literature, robotics, etc. The students explain their projects to the jury members, and to all the visitors who wish to learn more about the future challenges of our world.
Prof. Elies Molins, researcher at ICMAB and member of GISME (Interdisciplinary Reflection Group and Math Solutions for Entities), has collaborated in the creation of the exhibition 'Numbers and humanity' (Los números y la humanidad), which was exposed in the begining of 2018 at the UB, and on March this year at the "Saló de l'Ensenyament", next to the "Espai Ciència". Prof. Elies Molins is Scientific Director of the exhibition, together with Prof. Javier Tejada (GISME-UB), who is also the main organizer and curatior of the exhibition.
This year 2018 the ICMAB will be present like last year at "Expominer: Saló de minerals fòssils i joieria". The ICMAB will participate with a stand for some workshops for kids and families on minerals, materials and energy. In addition, some ICMAB researchers will give some science talks on different topics: magnetism, characterization of minerals using synchrotron light, optical properties of crystals, the history of borax (sodium borate), and quars. Don't miss the opportunity to visit one of the events with more minerals, fossils and jewelry of the world! A perfect place for school visits and families!
After the success of the first edition in 2017 with more than 300 attendees, the second edition of BCNspiracy will taka place in CosmoCaixa Barcelona on 26-27 October 2018. This year, apart from the traditional talks BCNspiracy on science outreach, there will be a session on INspriacy (26 October), where secondary school students will have the opportunity to get inspired by young students who are studying their degree or are doing their PhD. On 27 October there will also be workshops and shows (PLAYspiracy) to show the interactive side of science, and a final networking event between speakers and audience, BEERspiracy.
Esther Barrena and Stefania Sandoval bring the new materials to the schools with the program "A researcher in your classroom"
Two of our researchers, Dr. Esther Barrena, from the Physical Chemistry of Surfaces and Interfaces group, and Dr. Stefania Sandoval, from the Solid State Chemistry Group, went to two secondary schoolin the framework of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11F) and within the program "A researcher in your classroom" (Un investigador a la teva aula), to give two seminars on new materials for the future.
On Friday, March 9 2018, one day after the International Women's Day, the students from 2n BTX of the high school Infanta Isabelin Barcelona visited our Institute.
A surprise awaited them: instead of having the usual seminar from one of our researchers, they had 12 researchers from the Institute waiting from them. But this 12 women did not give them a talk. Instead, they represented the play "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers".
YoMo 2018: ICMAB presents 3D printed structures, scientific portraits and minerals and microscopy games
On 27 and 28 February, the ICMAB was present at YoMo 2018, The Youth Mobile Festival, with an interactive stand open to all the primary and secondary school students who visited the Festival, and to all of their teachers. On Tuesday 27 February, the stand was devoted to the 3D printed structures with the 3D printing 3Doodler pens, by Andrés Gómez, from the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) lab. Both boys and girls gathered around the tables willing to build their bridge or the structure of a carbon nanotube with the 3D pens.
The Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras from Sant Cugat visits ICMAB and learns the secret of batteries!
On Friday, 16 February, we received the visit of a class of 1st BTX students from Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras (Sant Cugat) who came to learn about "The nanomaterials of the future for energy" and, particularly, those for batteries. Dr. Dino Tonti, from the Solid State Chemistry Group, gave a talk on nanotechnology, materials for energy and focused on batteries, and on his research on lithium and sodium batteries.
ICMAB will be at YoMo 2018 with an interactive stand to enhance the creativity of the young visitors
On 27 and 28 February from 9 am to 4 pm, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) will be at YoMo with an interactive stand to enhance the creativity of the students that will attend this festival, and introduce them to the materials science and nanotechnology world.
On 19 January 2018 we received the visit of a group of highschool students from Institut Castellbisbal. The students listened first to our Communication and Outreach Officer, who welcomed them and explained them where they were and the work we do at ICMAB, and then to a seminar on "The materials of the future for nanomedicine" given by Dr. Judith Guasch, from the NANOMOL group. The seminar was followed by a visit to four of our laboratories: X-ray diffraction, AFM, SoftLab and the lab of Dr. Judith Guasch.
Irene Anton, PhD researcher at the NN group will give a talk on "Medicina regenerativa: cas concret dels implants de pell" on Wednesday, 16 May in Alfa Bar (Gràcia); and the Master student at NANOMOLgroup, Javier Repetto, will show the audience how to extract DNA on Tuesday 15 May in Casa Orlandai (Sarrià), during the session of "Nanoviaje por el cuerpo humano".
The 10alamenos9 Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology arrives to its 3rd edition! On April 2018, more than 1,000 participants (around 700 secondary school students, 150 primary school students), will participate in the more than 70 activities prepared by all the entities collaborating in this macro-event, that takes place in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Valencia, Bilbao and Madrid.
The Institut Bisbe Sevilla from Calella at ICMAB learning about the nanomaterials of the future for electronics
On December 15 the Institut Bisbe Sevilla, from Calella, visited ICMAB and spent the morning with us. Marta Mas-Torrent, researcher at the NANOMOL group gave the seminar on "Nanomaterials of the future for electronics", in which she first introduced the scientific career and the concepts of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and then showed the students her research in this field.
The program "Un investigador a la teva aula" brings Andrés Gómez and his AFM kit to Sant Joan Baptista school
Andrés Gómez has spent one hour and a half with students aged 10-11 years old (5è de Primària) at the Sant Joan Baptista school, in La Barceloneta (Barcelona) on 29 November 2017. Andrés Gómez, specialist and responsible for the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) laboratory at ICMAB, explained the kids the mysteries of science, nanotechnology, and even made some lab experiments.
The IES Pere Calders, at the Campus UAB, visited our Institute on November 17, during the Setmana de la Ciència (Science Week). More than 30 students between 16-18 years could visit some of our scientific services, laboratories, and listen to the lecture given by Dr. Anna Laromaine, from the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites Group (NN) on "Cellulose: a versatile material".
ICMAB participates in the initiative "Yo ilustro la ciencia 3" within Illustraciencia, an international cycle of activities between October and December 2017. We are hosting a Science Illustration exhibition by Roc Olivé Pous, specialized in paleoart, dinosaurs, biology and medicine, in the framework of the "Setmana de la Ciència 2017" activities organized by the CSIC in Catalunya.
The science outreach initiative "Un investigador a la teva aula" (A researcher in your classroom) brought Dr. Miquel Royo, from the Materials Simulation and Theory Group, to La Salle Bonanova highshool, in Barcelona, on the morning on November 13.; and Dr. Juan Luís García Pomar, Pau Molet and Cristiano Matricardi, from the NANOPTOgroup at Institut Gorgs, in Cerdanyola, on Friday 17 November....
ICMABparticipated on 10,11,12 November 2017 at ExpoMiner, the exhibition of minerals, fossils and jewelry, with some outreach talks given by four of our researchers, and science demos in our stand about superconducting materials, photovoltaic energy, batteries and graphene. According to ExpoMiner, which highlighted that the science talks and demos had been very popular among the visitors, all the talks and workshops of the exhibition attracted more than 450 visitors, which represented a 12.5 % increase respect to last year.
On 13-14 November, the members of the ICMAB Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) visited our Institute to scientifically evaluate the research lines and the overall performance of the Institute. In this year's visit, the research lines evaluated were RL1: Sustainable energy conversion and storage systems, and RL3: Oxide electronics.
2017 is the year of minerals as an energy resource. EXPOMINER(10-12 November) has chosen as its theme the relationship between minerals, energy and sustainable development. ICMAB, a research center of materials science, will participate in the event with some amazing talks from our researchers and interactive workshops. Join us in this event!
This Friday we had the visit of more than 25 students from IES Consell de Cent(Barcelona), who joined the ESCOLAB programme to visit universities and research centers in Catalonia.

As we already announced, Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés Iglesias, from ICMAB, have been selected as finalists with their project “BRIDG3D: Imprimiendo puentes en 3D” in the XVIII Edition of "CiencIa en Acción" in the category "Science and Technology". Well, the FINAL day has arrived: tomorrow, Andrés and Guillermo will head to Izarra Centre in Ermua (Vizcaya, Basque Country) to defend their project in front of many others, from 6 to 8 October 2017.
The 18th Edition of EXPOQUIMIA, the International Chemistry Eventfrom Fira de Barcelona, will take place on October 2-6, 2017, and will be the venue for the 10th World Congress on Chemical Engineering, the World Chemical Summit, and the PHARMAprocess forum. It will also host the exhibition Smart Chemistry, Smart Future, and the Industrial Biotech forum, and the IN(3D)USTRY, EQUIPLAST and EURSURFAS events.
On September 8, 2017, ICMAB and its employees will participate in the "Kids' Day at ICMAB".
PhD students, post-doctoral and young researchers, as well as engineers and technicians, from both academia and industry will be allowed to spend a week on a laboratory of the NFFA-Europe Consortium to gain hands-on experience of advanced services for nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Hendrik Ohldag, IEEE Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecturer for 2017, visited our Institute on June 27 and delivered the talk on "Ultrafast and Very Small: Discover Nanoscale Magnetism With Picosecond Time Resolution Using X-Rays".
The ICMAB hosts this year six students from the UAB Argó Program. They will be with us during the mornings, from June 26 until July 13.
Last weekend, 27-28 May, the Ciutadella Park hosted the 2017 Barcelona Science Festival "Festa de la Ciència 2017". ICMAB participated giving some "microtalks" on solar cells and photonic crystals.
More than 15 research institutes and universities participated at the 10alamenos9 Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival with more than 100 activities
The biggest Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival in Spain, 10alamenos9, which takes place simultaneously in different cities (Barcelona, Campus UAB-Bellaterra, Zaragoza, San Sebastián and Madrid), has organized more than 100 activities and reached more than 50 primary schools and secondary high schools, with their respective students. More than 15 research institutes and universities participated in the event.
3D printing: teaching science and technology in a creative way, and an opportunity for R+D activities, providers and enterprises
During the Youth Mobile Festival Barcelona (YoMo) (February 27th - Mach 2nd), Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés from ICMAB used the 3Doodler 3D printing pens to teach the scientific method to those, young students and adults, approaching the ICMAB stand. The activity consisted in building a resistant bridge with the 3D printing pens.
El Festival de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia 10alamenos9 té com a objectiu la sensibilització i l’augment del coneixement general cap a la nanociència i la nanotecnologia al nostre país, mostrant les implicacions i l’abast d'aquestes dues disciplines a través de tallers, exposicions, taules rodones, cafès, tertúlies, seminaris, classes magistrals, actuacions de ciència, art i moltes altres activitats.

Un nanómetro es la mil millonésima (10-9, “10 a la menos 9”) parte de un metro. Un tamaño realmente diminuto. El Festival pretende, de una forma amena y emocionante, acercar a todos los públicos la escala nanométrica, sus efectos y cómo este conocimiento va a cambiar nuestras vidas a través de innumerables aplicaciones y productos. ¡No importan la edad ni los conocimientos previos!
El ICMAB ha estado estos días en el YOMO, un salón didáctico centrado en la juventud, vinculado al Mobile World Congress. Durante dos días los numerosos visitantes que pasaron por el taller, organizado por Andrés Gómez y Guillermo De Andrés, pudieron aprender qué es el método científico y se les invitó a ser científicos por un día aplicando los conocimientos adquiridos para construir puentes usando los lápices 3Doodler.

Los jovenes del programa Joves y Ciéncia de la Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera han estado durante varios días en el ICMAB y han aprendido sobre el funcionamiento del centro, sus equipos y su personal.
Dos estudiantes que hicieron una estancia en el ICMAB cuando estaban en bachillerato han vuelto después de 4 años para hacer una estancia de estudiantes de grado.
NFFA-Europe project (www.nffa.eu) is the first open-access infrastructure in Europe to perform research at the nanoscale. As part of the training activities, a Summer School devoted to "Nanoscience Foundries and Fine Analysis (NFFA), available instruments and techniques" took place at the Engineering School of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) between 18th and 22nd of July.
Un año mas hemos acogido en el ICMAB una nueva edición del programa ARGO. Durante varios días los jovenes participantes han conocido el centro, han trabajado codo con codo con investigadores y han aprendido como es el día a día de la profesión científica.

El pasado viernes, 10 de junio, nos visitaron un grupo de estudiantes de la facultad de Material Engineering de la Purdue University (Indiana, USA) acompañados por la Prof. Lia Stanciu y también del Prof. Jean-Louis Marty de la Université Perpignan (Francia).

En el programa 'Un investigador a l’aula’ les investigadores i els investigadors de l’ICMAB s’acosten als centres educatius i porten els nous materials a les aules.
En el último día del Festival 10 a la menos nueveel ICMAB como colaborador organizó una visita guiada a sus instalaciones. Los visitantes pudieron conocer nuestros equipos técnicos y a nuestro personal, el cual les explicó su funcionamiento y qué ciencias intervienen en las investigaciones de nuestro día a día.
Anna May y Pol Sallés han estado en el Hall de la Facultad de Ciencias de la UAB en el taller de Nanociencia, integrado en el evento del Festival de Nanociencia y Nanotecnologia 10 a la menos 9. Asimismo, como parte del ciclo de conferencias realizado por diferentes expertos en sus campos, Anna Laromaine dio una charla sobre la Nanomedicina.
Esta semana se celebra el Festival de Nanociencia y Nanotecnología. El ICMAB participa los días:

El Instituto Catalán de Nanociencia y Nanotecnología (ICN2), la Facultad de Ciencias de la UAB, el Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), el Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona (IMB-CNM) y el sincrotrón ALBA participarán la semana del 4 al 8 de abril en el Festival de Nanociencia y Nanotecnología "10alamenos9", unas jornadas de ámbito estatal que también tendrán lugar en Barcelona, Donosti y Zaragoza.
La semana pasada, del 9 al 13 de Marzo el ICMAB participó junto otros centros del CSIC en el Saló de l'Ensenyament. Gracias al trabajo de Júlia Jareño, Ferran Vallès, Bohores Villarejo y Guillermo De Andrés, alumnos y profesores pudieron conocer de primera mano qué es el ICMAB y el CSIC, saber qué relación pueden tener con ellos durante su etapa academica y comprobar con sus propios ojos el funcionamiento de los superconductores y una maqueta de un microscopio de fuerzas atomicas

El passat dia 18 febrer l'ICMAB va acollir la visita alumnes i professors de l'IE Infanta Isabel d'Aragó. La Dra Núria Crivillers va explicar què és la Ciència de Materials i el gran nombre de disciplines que la integren.
Los alumnos del IES Vall del Tenes visitaron el pasado 27 las instalaciones del ICMAB, quienes junto a sus profesores recorrieron los laboratorios y asistieron a diversas charlas sobre Nuevos Materiales y Seguridad en Laboratorios.

El CSIC está presente en la edición 2015 del Saló de l’Ensenyament, con un estand ubicado en el ‘Espai Ciència’, una de las áreas especificas del Salón con la que se pretende acercar la investigación científica a los estudiantes y profesores de Secundaria.

Researchers from the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona – ICMAB – have come up with a simple way to convert nanoscale 3D scans captured using atomic force microscopy into full-sized 3D printable models. They’ve published the process on an easy to follow tutorial using common 3D printing software like Blender and Slic3r.
El fòrum comptarà amb una conferència inaugural a càrrec de Xavier Obradors, director de l'Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona del CSIC, sobre "Els nanomaterials de la 3ª Revolució industrial", i en el que es debatran temes com ara les tarifes elèctriques tant als petits consumidors com a les industries, l'autoconsum fotovoltaic o l'eficiència energètica.
