The project Greene3D, awarded as best initiative of circular economy by the Generalitat and the PRUAB

Laura López Mir, Doctor in Physics graduated at ICMAB, and Beatriz Espinosa, PhD researcher at ICTA, were awarded with the First Prize in the Program "Generació d'Idees", organized by the PRUAB and the Generalitat, for their Greene3D project: sustainable filament for 3D printing based on agroindustrial organic waste, such as olive stones, which are a valuable, abundant and a proximity resource. Congratulations!

Roberta Verrelli, winner of the 6th Early Career Scientist Presentation Contest of the World Materials Research Institute Forum

Between 18 and 22 June 2018, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington (UK) hosted the 6th WMRIF Workshop for Early Career Scientists. From ICMAB, Roberta Verrelli, Francesca Leonardi and Ignasi Fina attended the workshop, which concentrated on exceptional early career scientists in World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF) institutes with the goals of network building, and knowledge and experience exchange, along with the chance to examine facilities of the host institute.

Five ICMAB graduates in Materials Science received the PhD Extraordinary Award

Five ICMAB graduates from the PhD programme in Materials Science received the PhD Extraordinary Award for their doctoral thesis developed during the period 2014-2015. The award ceremony took place on May 18, 2018, at 6 pm, at the Hotel Campus UAB. Laura Cabana Jiménez, Pedro López-Aranguren Oliver, Nerea Murillo Cremaes, David Pesquera Herrero and Albert Queraltó López were recognised for their PhD dissertations.

Sole Roig, PhD researcher at the NN group, finalist of the UAB contest "Tesi en 4 minuts"

On Tuesday, 15 May at 10 am at the UAB Theatre, the final of the contest "Tesi en 4 minuts", in which PhD researchers explain their thesis project in 4 minutes took place. Sole Roig, from the Nanoparticles & Nanocomposites (NN) Group, was one of the 10 finalists. She presented her project "Bacterial Cellulose Nanocomposites", in which she modifies and functionalizes this biopolymer to turn it into an advanced material for medical and energy applications.

Arnau Bertran: Premi Sant Jordi 2018 from the SCQ-IEC for his bacherlor's thesis

Arnau Bertran Inglada, who did his bachelor's thesis at ICMAB under the supervision of Gerard Tobias (ICMAB, Solid State Chemistry Group) and Àlvar Sánchez (UAB, Physics Dept) has been awarded with the "Premi Sant Jordi 2018" of the Societat Catalana de Química (SCQ-IEC) for his work entitled "Òxid de grafè reduït decorat amb nanopartícules d’òxid de ferro. Síntesi, caracterització i estudi magnètic" (Reduced graphene oxide decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles. Synthesis, characterization and magnetic study).

NANOMOL group accredited with the TECNIO certification

NANOMOL Group has been accredited with the TECNIO certification as a Technology Developer Organization, until 2019. This TECNIO certification was created by the Government of Catalonia, through ACCIÓ. This certification supports the most qualified agents involved in technology transfer processes, allows companies to access advanced R&D and develop new products and services, and increases the scope of technology projects by finding the most suitable technology partners & suppliers.

High interdisciplinarity and leadership within ICMAB researchers according to their h-index

A large number of ICMAB researchers are among those researchers in Spain with high h-index in many different disciplines: Applied Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Crystallography, Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Multidisciplinary Chemistry, and Multidisciplinary Materials Science, according to the Web of Science. 

The website h-webcindario (http://indice-h.webcindario.com) from GRUPO DIH, which compiles the h-index numbers from the researchers based in Spain, has done now the yearly update The h-index numbers are collected from the Web of Science ISI website, which is of free access for the research centers through FECYT.

New collaborative project between the MULFOX group and MIT, funded by “la Caixa” Foundation

Dr. Ignasi Fina has been recently awarded with a collaborative project, funded by "la Caixa" Foundation, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-SPAIN "la Caixa" Foundation SEED FUND). The project is focused on the investigation of new materials for photovoltaic applications. The aim is to study the use of a new kind of material, called a ferroelectric semiconductor, that may offer a powerful mechanism to convert sunlight into electricity.

ICMAB Researcher, Dr. Enric Canadell, elected member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB)

On December 2017, Dr. Enric Canadell, Research Professor at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), became elected member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB). Two other researchers from CSIC, Dr. Xavier Querol (IDAEA-CSIC), and Dr. Francesc Piferrer (ICM-CSIC) were also elected, together with Dra. Fàtima Bosch (UAB) and Dr. Roderic Guigó (CRG). Finally, Dra. Fabiola Gianotti (CERN) was elected as correspondent member.

Research Award L'Oréal-Unesco FWIS 2017 for Mariona Coll and her project on new materials for photovoltaics

As we already announced on July 2017, Mariona Coll, researcher at the Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB) in the SUMAN group, has been awarded with the Research Award L'Oréal-Unesco "For Women in Science" 2017. The awards ceremony took place this last Wednesday, 22 November, in Madrid. Mariona will receive 15.000 € that will be invested in her research project which "can contribute to one of the most important challenges of this century: find a new energy system for the production of clean energy".

Judith Guasch, awarded with a leader position of a Max Planck Partner Group

The ICMAB researcher Judith Guasch has been appointed Leader of a Max Planck Partner Group (Dynamic Biomimetics for Cancer Immunotherapy) in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research (Heidelberg, Germany). This position, started this same 2017, strengthens the collaboration of ICMAB with the Max Planck Society through the research that Judith is performing, which is based on the development of biomimetic lymph nodes to help improving novel adoptive cell therapies, specially those designed to treat cancer.

The video "A story on Bacterial Cellulose" among the Top 15 critically acclaimed of the JoVE contest: Film Your Research

Last June 2017, Anna May Masnou and Sole Roig, from the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites Group (NN), filmed a video for the JoVE contest: Film your research. Although the video, entitled "A Story on Bacterial Cellulose", did not make it to the final, the video made it to the Top 15 critically acclaimed videos by the jury, among hundreds of other submissions in this internatinal science communication contest.

Dr. Jose Muñoz: Premi Extraordinari de Doctorat UAB

Jose Muñoz, who did his PhD at the UAB, and is now a Postdoctoral Fellow in the NANOMOL group at ICMAB, under the supervision of Dr. Marta Mas and Dr. Núria Crivillers, has been awarded with the PhD special prize award (Premi Extraordinari de Doctorat) of the UAB.

The project “BRIDG3D: Imprimiendo puentes en 3D” brings ICMAB to the final of "Ciencia en Acción"

We are very happy to announce that Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés have been selected as finalists with their project “BRIDG3D: Imprimiendo puentes en 3D” in the XVIII Edition of "Cienca en Acción" in the category "Science and Technology". The FINAL will take place in Izarra Centre in Ermua (Vizcaya, Basque Country) from 6 to 8 October 2017

Dr. Jaume Veciana received a Mention of Honor for his dedication in the creation of NANBIOSIS

On April 22, Dr. Jaume Veciana received a Mention of Honor from the current President of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, during the celebration of the X Anniversary of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery “Jesus Usón” for his commitment, effort and dedication in the creation of the Singular Scientific Technological Infrastructures (ICTS) NANBIOSIS, in collaboration with the Center for Biomedical Research Center in Bioingeneering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN).
