The Matheroes project was born in 2018, with the exhibition "Matheroes: Supermaterials, the heroes of the future" with which you could know first hand the new materials that are currently being developed at the ICMAB-CSIC thanks to research in the field of Materials Science.
The exhibition was presented in many different places, as explained in this article in teh SOCIEMAT journal, such as in Leioa (Bilbao), in the Researcher's Night in Zaragoza, at the ICMAB for all our staff and for many schools and UAB students, at two libraries in Sabadell (Ponent and Vapor Badia), during the Researcher's Night in CosmoCaixa and also in the Sagrada Família Library in Barcelona. Even the YouTuber SizeMatters talked about the Matheroes in one of her videos, and they also appeared on TV in "Qué Animal"!
After the good feedback the project had, this year the exhibition is complemented with a virtual escape and some didactic guides specially prepared for the teaching staff and the secondary school, professional training and special education students.
The aim of the project is to continue promoting the scientific culture of students and young people and their interest in scientific-technical careers, as well as making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) research and professions visible.
Participants of the escape will receive the following letter:
"Last minute news! The Matheroes, who are part of the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Protection League, have been captured and locked up in a prison whose whereabouts are unknown and which will be destroyed within an hour. The kidnapping has been claimed by The Dark Squad, a criminal organization against the SDG, responsible for embodying most of the bad things affecting our ecosystem, from diseases to energy waste, pollution, or global warmin.
From the ICMAB, Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona, headquarters of the Matheroes, we ask for citizen collaboration to help in their release and to find the coordinates of where they are being kept kidnapped. Remember, our future depends on them!".
The participants of the virtual escape will have to solve challenges to discover the coordinates of the kidnapped Matheroes and thus help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the UN.
The virtual escape "Matheroes: The Box" is a gamified educational tool based on games and techniques capable of awakening emotions, motivating and encouraging attention, arousing curiosity and facilitating the learning of new knowledge. The virtual escape "Matheroes: The Box" will be available in the coming months to be played online or to download the printable versions of the game and play it offline in schools. The activity will be adapted to different educational levels.
The five animated superheroes, with a comic book character look, are PhotoEnergy, BioNanoCapsule, ElectroWoman, SuperConductor and Magnon. All of them represent the main research areas of the Institute of Materials Science and inform about new applications and products in the field of materials to meet the challenges of the society of the 21st century in energy, electronics, and health.
