The first call for Frontier Interdisciplinary Projects within the Smart FUNctional materials for a better FUTURE (FUNFUTURE) Severo Ochoa Programme boosts 7 new collaborative projects.
The FIP are an internal call of proposals for researchers of the Institute aimed for the development of both experimental and theoretical frontier interdisciplinary research projects through the exploration of innovative and radical novel ideas, the development of new methodologies or the reinterpretation of already established paradigms in the field of new functional materials.
The objective is to generate cutting-edge research in the application areas of the FUNFUTURE Programme: clean & secure energy, smart & sustainable electronics or smart nanomedicine. To achieve this, ICMAB sought projects that showed the opportunity to increase the Technology Readyness Level (TRL) of a proof-of-concept based on previously obtained scientific results.
The projects will run for 1 or 2 years, and can be individual or collaborative (between researchers of different research groups or from other institutions). This edition of the FIP Call had two categories, one based on the exploration of novel ideas and methodologies (Category A), and one based on the development of Proof-of-concept projects (Category B).
ICMAB's Deputy Director M. Rosa Palacín reveals the projects granted with a Severo Ochoa FIP on this call.
The granted FIP projects of the first 2020 call, which were announced in an internal session on Tuesday, 13 April 2021, by ICMAB Deputy Director M. Rosa Palacín, PI of the Severo Ochoa project are:
Marta Mas-Torrent, from the Molecular Nanoscience and Organic Materials (NANOMOL) Group
Gervasi Herranz, from the Multifunctional Thin Films and Complex Structures (MULFOX) Group
Can Onur Avci, from the Multifunctional Thin Films and Complex Structures (MULFOX) Group
Albert Queraltó, from the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures (SUMAN) Group
Teresa Puig, from the Superconducting Materials Research Group (SUMAN) Group
Anna Laromaine, from the Nanoparticles & Nanocomposites (NN) Group
Julián Cerón, from the Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL)

Congratulations to all the granted researchers!
A second call for FIP will occur later this year, with a temptative date of July 2021.
ICMAB FIPs are possible thanks to the financial support from the Spanish Ministry Science and Innovation, through the “Severo Ochoa” Programme for Centres of Excellence in R&D (CEX2019-000917-S).
